Target Markets

While walking down the hall this morning, I happened across one of the numerous bulletin boards that litter the campus walls. Among the clutter of colourful paper were the usual ads for new roommates, vehicles for sale and questionable job “opportunities”. On occasion however, there are some truly bizarre advertisements that make you laugh at humanity. Today was one of those days.

Nestled between these typo-laden documents was an invitation to an open house of sorts. A new business has opened up in the city, and they were inviting post-secondary students to come out and see what they are all about. Now this may not seem like an odd situation, until you come to realize that this is for a pet crematorium. This company offers funeral and cremation services for deceased pets. And they came to a post-secondary institution? And want students to come and see “what they are all about”? Did I mention they were serving snacks?

Now being a pet owner myself, I can empathize with the pain of losing a cherished member of the family, and that there may be an untapped demand for this type of service. Having said that, perhaps I missed the lecture in marketing class on identifying your target market and focusing your advertising on key demographics, as one has to ask why is a pet mortuary focusing their marketing on students? What kind of ludicrous marketing lackey got so stoned that he giggled himself into a stupor at the thought that students would want to attend this little soireé? We often laugh that students are so strapped for cash that they will attend almost anything that offers free food, but c’mon…

And for those of you who may be searching for a unique first date destination – look no further! They have extended this offer for three whole days – allowing you the perfect opportunity to make that “lasting impression”. How romantic would it be to take that special someone to a pet crematorium; slide your hand into theirs; look deep into their eyes and whisper:

“Should Mr. Fluffy Muffins have a cedar puppy chest or a shiny hydrant urn?”

Ooh – makes a girl all tingly inside it does…and they say romance is…um..well, you know.
